If you haven’t yet experienced the magic of Idaho’s Tempranillo, 2025 is the year to do so! With the Idaho Wine Commission’s official celebration of this vibrant red wine varietal, there’s no better time to explore the rich flavors and unique expressions of Tempranillo, a wine that’s been flourishing here in the Snake River Valley.
We invite Idahoans, visitors, and wine enthusiasts of all kinds to taste, purchase, and celebrate Idaho Tempranillo wines in 2025. Hear from Idaho grape growers and winemakers on the unique qualities of Idaho Tempranillo.
Tempranillo, derived from the Spanish word temprano, meaning “early,” is aptly named for its tendency to ripen earlier than many other grape varieties. Considered native to Spain’s famous Rioja wine region which includes a sub-appellation in the Basque Country, Tempranillo has found a new home in Idaho, thanks to the Snake River Wine Region’s latitude and climate, which closely resemble its place of origin.
Idaho’s hot, dry summers, high-elevation vineyards, and volcanic soils in the Snake River Valley provide the perfect environment for Tempranillo to thrive. This Old World grape has flourished in Idaho’s New World wine region, taking on distinctive qualities that reflect the state’s unique terroir. Idaho Tempranillo has become a shining example of how a traditional European varietal can adapt and thrive in a modern, emerging wine region.
The connection runs deeper than just geography. Idaho boasts the largest Basque population outside of Spain, and their influence is reflected in the growing popularity of Tempranillo, now one of the state’s top grape varieties.
Established in 2007, the Snake River Wine Region spans 8,263 square miles and includes over 1,350 acres of vineyard plantings. The region’s ancient volcanic sediment has created fertile, well-draining soils that give growers precise control over the growing process, producing wines with exceptional character and quality.
Idaho Tempranillo has become an essential part of the state’s wine identity. What makes it so special? First, its range of expressions. From young, fruit-forward wines to complex, aged bottles, Tempranillo offers something for every wine lover. Idaho Tempranillo is full-bodied, with notes of vanilla, plum, strawberry, and savory notes of leather and olive.
One of the most exciting things about Tempranillo is its aging potential. Well-crafted Tempranillos can age for two or more decades, developing new layers of complexity with time. If you're building a wine collection or simply looking for a bottle that evolves in the glass, Idaho Tempranillo is a must-have.
