With the Idaho Wine Commission’s official celebration of this vibrant red wine varietal, there’s no better time to explore the rich flavors and unique expressions of Tempranillo, a wine that’s been flourishing here in the Snake River Valley.  We invite Idahoans, visitors, and wine enthusiasts of all kinds to taste, purchase, and celebrate Idaho Tempranillo wines in 2025. Hear from Idaho grape growers and winemakers on the unique qualities of Idaho Tempranillo. ## **From Spain to Snake River: How Tempranillo Thrives in Idaho's Unique Terroir** Tempranillo, derived from the Spanish word *temprano*, meaning “early,” is aptly named for its tendency to ripen earlier than many other grape varieties. Idaho Tempranillo has become a shining example of how a traditional European varietal can adapt and thrive in a modern, emerging wine region. The connection runs deeper than just geography. Idaho boasts the largest Basque population outside of Spain, and their influence is reflected in the growing popularity of Tempranillo, now one of the state’s top grape varieties.
